Welcome to “The House in the Middle of the Street,” my winter tale about a house, its occupants, and a yearly visit made by a boy and a girl on New Year’s Eve who knock and knock and knock at the front door, asking to be invited in.
This house exists timelessly in the shadows of our family secrets and the rules it passes on to each who claims ownership of it. Let me bring you into my house, where beautiful promises are made, heart-filled hopes are heard throughout the night, and our ravenous desires are revealed, all on the eve of the brand New year.
Enter with open eyes and attentive ears. And if you do have a GOD, you may want to bring them in with you. Please know, in life, there are specific times and specific places where instructions do need to be followed. And though we are fellow travelers, moving side by side, it is best to remember who and what we may be traveling with.
Before I go, do consider this: on certain days and certain nights of the year, we may hear a sturdy knocking at our front door, please, dear readers, be selective whom you invite in.
Sincerely,
JSG

Reviews for “The House in the Middle of the Street.”
“ Jennifer Sklias-Gahan draws inspiration from the same well-spring as the ancient Greek myths and fairy tales with a timelessness and a haunting quality that stays with the reader long after finishing the book. ”
“… A compelling story with lyrical description and an intense atmosphere from the very first pages. The influence of Greek myths and the darker fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen is clear and the illustrations by Myles Mullen included in the book also highlight the weighty atmosphere of dark fantasy in the story. ”

“ Jennifer Sklias-Gahan writes in a lyrical, rhythmic style, almost as if telling a cautionary story aloud by firelight. The pacing is swift yet dreamlike, unfolding in recurring patterns that mirror the strange visitors' annual return. The author uses vivid fairy-tale imagery, such as winter winds, golden-sealed jars, and birdlike transformations, to create an eerie, hypnotic atmosphere. The language is simple on the surface, yet has a haunting weight through repetition and ritual. Readers who enjoy folklore-inspired stories, symbolic horror, and modern myths about what we allow into our lives will find The House in the Middle of the Street especially compelling, particularly for its sense of warning and its lingering moral about being careful who you invite inside. ”

“ Jennifer Skliás-Gahan writes and performs a darkly beautiful story that has a flavor of a Victorian gothic fairytale and the depth of Greek drama. Ms. Skliás-Gahan’s wonderful velvet voice narrates this fable using myths and metaphors to tell a story of two little children who visit the house in the middle of the street and nothing in that house is ever the same again.
Ms. Skliás-Gahan’s charming dramatization of each character’s voice is just one of the many gems of this audiobook that I loved. Another special touch is the original music sprinkled throughout this intriguing tale.
Jennifer Skliás-Gahan’s amazing ability to create the chilling voices of spooky little children, as she narrates her perfect story, rewarding us with a poignant message at the end. Just in time for Halloween and the long nights ahead.
Bravo.”
